Jammu in Assembly elections | | | Masood Malik
Early Times Report JAMMU, Dec 12: Three phases of Assembly elections in J&K are over and no major political party has so far talked about the political and economic aspirations of the people of Jammu province. The NC, like other Kashmir-based and Valley-centric parties, hates Jammu and it went to the polls in all the three phases on Kashmir-specific planks. It talked about autonomy and it denounced Army and paramilitary forces during all these three phases. It also challenged the state's accession with India. Besides, it attacked Delhi several times and indulged in politics of competitive communalism and secessionism to restore the ground it lost during its 6-year-long misrule. It made it loud and clear that Kashmir was, is and shall ever remain its core constituency. The Congress did talk about Jammu and again promised regional council for this province, but it was only an attempt to once again hoodwink and mislead the people of Jammu province. No one in Jammu, who understands Congress and the Congress-style politics, would ever believe it. After all, the Congress had made similar promises in 2002 and 2008 but had not taken any step to fulfill its 2002 regional development board promise or the 2008 regional council solemn commitment. On the contrary, it further damaged Jammu by making common cause with the Kashmiri ruling elite. As for the BJP, less said the better. Suffice to say that the BJP has let down the people of Jammu province. Its vision document offers nothing to Jammu. It starts with Kashmir and it ends with Kashmir. The truth is that the BJP leaders have been taunting people of Jammu province by talking about the aspirations and the so-called pain of Kashmiri people, barring the internally displaced Kashmiri Hindus and the minority Sikhs. Prime Minister Modi, for example, while addressing an election rally at Kishtwar only talked Kashmir and Kashmiriyat and didn't refer to the Jammu's woes even once. Feed back from Kishtwar is that "even the BJP candidate Sunil Sharma is critical of the BJP leadership and its style of campaigning". It's no wonder that the people of Jammu province are in a fix. The only option they have is between the BJP and other political parties and all of them are fundamentally pro-Kashmir. They suffered during all these years of accession because no political party in the state and no national party ever cared for their aspirations and they are destined to suffer to suffer for some more years because no existing political party has the guts to acknowledge the realities in the state. |
