JAMMU, Dec 12: Knowing the importance of the first-time voters in the current elections, the political parties and the independent candidates in the five assembly segments of Kathua district are exploring traditional as well as non-traditional ways in influencing them.
In urban and plain belts like Kathua and Hiranagar, for instance, most candidates are relying heavily on technology and are extensively using social media sites to convey their message as they are aware that channels like facebook and Whatsapp are potential weapons to reach out to youth who are kind of addicted to social media.
The candidates having different party affiliations and independents have created Facebook and Whatsapp accounts in Kathua and Hiranagar Assembly constituencies to woo those voters who are going to cast votes for the first time in their life while in hilly constituencies of Billawar, Bani and Basohli the candidates are using more conventional methods like door to door campaign and public meetings from Panchayat to Panchayat and village to village.
The official nominees of different political parties as well as independent candidates do not want to lose any opportunity to showcase their programmes and policies amongst the fresh voters, who can make or break any candidate's fortune as was seen at the time of last Lok Sabha elections where the youngsters, who cast votes for the first time, played a major role to a greater extent in shaping the final outcome.
Out of the total 4, 32, 331 voters in Kathua district, as many as 31,223 new electors have been registered in five Assembly constituencies of Bani, Basohli, Kathua, Billawar and Hiranangar.
Officials statistics reveal that the highest number of first-time voters have been registered in Hiranagar Assembly constituency where 8,454 new voters out of the total 1,07,657 electors spread across 134 polling stations have earned the right to vote followed by Kathua Assembly segment where 7295 first timers are part of the total 1,12,083 electors spread across 147 polling stations.
After Kathua segment, the highest number of new voters has been added in Basohli Assembly constituency where 6,126 new electors will now be eligible to exercise the right to franchise in the total figure of 75,357 voters spread across 121 polling stations.
Billawar Assembly segment comes the next where 6107 new voters have been registered out of total 95,728 electors spread across 150 polling stations.
The least number of first-time voters have been registered in Bani Assembly constituency where 3251 electors have been registered out of total 41,506 voters spread across 73 polling stations.
According to the political pundits, the presence of more and more youth voters has made the elections more interesting as the first time voters, though, are not politically that much aware but even then they cannot be easily swayed since they know the power of their vote and its judicious use.
