SRINAGAR, Dec 12: Taking potshots at the state government for failing to protect women in the state, students of Kashmir Law College today held demonstrations here to protest growing incidents of violence against women at the hands of malevolent youth.
Pertinently, a 21-year-old Law student was on Thursday injured in an acid attack by unidentified car-borne youth outside Kashmir Law College in Nowshehra area of east City.
'Stop sale of acid, stop violence against women and wake up government' dozens of the students of Kashmir Law College including girls this afternoon appeared at Press Enclave here and registered protest against growing incidents of violence against women in the state.
Besides a firm law that ensures foolproof safety of females, the protesting students demanded death penalty to the guilty youth who sprinkled acid on girl student.
"This ghastly attack on our colleague exposed the inadequacy of the government and I must not hesitate to say that the women in Jammu and Kashmir are insecure. Despite being aware about the plight of the women the government never bothered to introduce a firm law to teach lessons to those malevolent youth who love to make females victim of their aggression," Arooj a protesting student told reporters.
She claimed that parents in Kashmir will no longer allow their daughters to go to schools and colleges fearing similar incidents.
"Being a girl I feel scared travelling in passenger buses fearing Damini Nirbhaya like frightening incidents as the youth with wicked mindset use to board the overloaded buses to harass women. AS we are living in Kashmir we are not allowed to wear jeans nor could Kashmiri girl intermingles with the jet-age," added Arooj.
Mehran another student said that the government must introduce some stringent laws in the state so that such inhuman acts are curbed.
"The respect and honor of our sisters is on stake as the way our government is dealing with issues of such grave nature is appalling," claimed Mehran.
The protesters demanded stern punishment to the guilty and appealed well conscience people to raise their voice against women abuse and exert a pull on the government to introduce a sheltered law for women.
"We demand victim to be provided with a government job and her treatment be done in a reputed hospital outside the state. We want that the open sale of acid be banned and the merchant dealing with acid be regularly checked as to how much of stock he sold and how much is pending, such precautions helps to curb this growing menace ," Irfan Ahmad a protesting law student demanded.
It's worth mentioning that the local court here awarded 10-year rigorous imprisonment to a man who threw acid on a woman here last year, saying such an attack was a "worst form of torture" against women and needed to be dealt firmly.
