SRINAGAR, Dec 12: Bulk voting in the first three phases of assembly elections in Kashmir has surprised many with the process being viewed as a change agent in the discourse of Kashmir politics. People who voted in these elections give different reasons for their participation. While for some it would bring development in their area for others the participation would mean an overall change. "We have been deprived from every entity during all these years, I never believed in these elections. This time I voted for the development of my area," said a voter in Panzla, Rafiabad.
The huge turnout in these elections has even surprised the mainstream politicians, who till the recent past used to bank on boycott. Many political pundits were thinking of least voter turnout this time because of varying reasons, but the results were quite astounding.
Many voters held that staying away from polls helps wrong people to attain power, while some believed that they are fed up of the system and want a change. 'I am voting for the first time. I voted because I want a change. If we do not vote than a person irrespective of our wishes will rule us and bring miseries for us," said Irfan Ahmad, a voter in Pattan. Two phases of the elections are yet to come and if the trend goes on like the previous phases, the results are expected to be startling on December 23 when the counting of votes would be taken up across the state. Meanwhile the huge turnout is also attributed to the young and enthusiastic people joining politics and the experts view it as "sea change" to modify the mindset of the masses.
"People are now fully aware about the politics. They do not want wrong people to rule them anymore. They want to elect energetic politicians to serve them in a better way," said Nasir Nigar, a political analyst. Pertinently, official records show that the first two phases of ongoing election witnessed more than 70 percent voting in Kashmir, while the third phase saw a voting percentage of 58 percent.
