FCI lands in trouble as SMC prosecutes its officials for 'negligence' | FIR also registered by police | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Dec 12: Food Corporation of India (FCI) has landed in trouble after its senior officials have been prosecuted by Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) following allegations that the Corporation did not lift flood affected stock from its go-down. The FCI officials prosecuted are Abishek Singh, Executive Director, North Zone FCI, Greater Noida, New Delhi, Kishan Kumar, General Manager, Regional Office FCI Trikuta Nagar Jammu and Amit Kaiser, Area Manager, District Srinagar, Baghat Barzulla Srinagar. These officials have been prosecuted for not lifting the flood hit stock from FCI go-down situated at Guru Bazaar here post flood. The action against the FCI officials was taken after Chief Sanitation Officer SMC Manzoor Ahmed Taray during his visit to ward no 22 of Guru Bazaar found that FCI go-down situated at Guru Bazar was under water and about five thousand metric tons of food grains/ rice were stocked there. This entire flood hit stock which is till date lying in their go-down has added to the problems of people. In a press release, Media Relations Officer, SMC Masrat Yousuf said that as per the provisions of Jammu & Kashmir Municipal Corporation Act, a notice has been initially served to Area Manager FCI vide letter number SMC/SCO/2242-46 dated 4-10-2014 and in response to the Manager (Legal) FCI District Srinagar's letter No DM/PA/DOS/2014/7648 dated 7-10-14. "The concerned FCI official had sought space from SMC for dumping the unwanted material, SMC in reply has communicated the concerned authorities 'that a space for scientific disposal of the entire flood hit stock shall be provided at Municipal landfill site vide letter NO.SMC/225-53 dated 8-10-2014," said the Media Relations Officer. Masrat while quoting the local residents of the area said the people have been complaining regularly that the destroyed/rotten food grains stocked in FCI go-downs are emanating bad odor in the entire area and have become a source of nuisance which is posing threat to the human lives in the adjoining vicinity too. "Despite the lapse of more than two months time the FCI authorities have failed to lift the destroyed grains which have now become a serious threat to public health so SMC finally decided to prosecute the offenders in the court of law under the provisions of the Municipal Corporation Act, 2000 regarding sanitation and public health. An FIR has also been lodged against these offenders in the concerned police station Shaheed Gunj vide letter number SMC/SCO/2914-16 dated 11-12-14," said Media Relations Officer. |
