Early Times Report
JAMMU, Feb 12 : Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, who on February 7 was re-elected to the Rajya Sabha with the support of the NC and three non-Congress and non-NC MLAs, has attacked patron of PDP Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and asked him to refrain from forging an alliance with the "communal" BJP. "Alliance of PDP and BJP can change political situation of J&K. PDP which till yesterday was against BJP is in alliance with them. People in Kashmir voted for PDP as it claimed that it could stop communal BJP. But now against the secular credentials of the state they (PDP) went with BJP," he has been said. On the other hand, he has congratulating NC president Farooq Abdullah (presently in London), its working president and former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, People's Democratic Forum MLAs Hakim Mohammed Yaseen and M Y Tarigami and independent MLA Er. Rashid for voting him during the Rajya sabha elections and "maintaining secular credentials" and that the "communal BJP will fire from the PDP's shoulders in J&K". The BJP will use PDP for its own agenda and if there is communal polarization, PDP will be responsible for it," he has also said while attacking Mufti Sayeed. The whole argument of Azad against the PDP and the Mufti is that they have entered into an alliance with the BJP whose approach towards J&K is communal and that whatever happens in J&K in the coming days, the PDP will be responsible. The fact of the matter is that Azad, like all the anti-Jammu forces, wants the Mufti to hold his party aloof from the BJP and keep Jammu out of government. He is of the view that formation of a grand alliance between the PDP, the NC, the Congress and independent MLAs from Kashmir is a must to "respect the Kashmiri sentiment".
Now that he has accused the Mufti and the PDP of flirting with a party against which it fought and sought mandate in the Kashmir Valley and elsewhere, it is time to underline the fact that the Congress also contested the election against the NC, the PDP and the BJP and that Azad sought the support of a party to win the Rajya Sabha election with the support of a party that, according to him, was responsible for the defeat of the Congress party in the 2014 Lok Sabha and Assembly elections as also for his own defeat in the Lok Sabha election. In fact, ever since his defeat in May 2014, Azad had been denouncing the NC in general and Omar Abdullah in particular and holding them squarely responsible for the very poor performance of the Congress party in 2014. So much so, Azad questioned the Congress high Command for its decision to allow Omar Abdullah to hold the office of Chief Minister for an entire term of six years. As for Omar Abdullah, he also charged Azad with stabbing him from the back or hitting him below the belt. It was only on the eve the Rajya Sabha election that Azad took a complete U-turn and showered praise on Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah and he did a U-turn not for promoting the interests of the Congress party but his own personal interests. That many in the Congress in J&K were opposed to Azad became clear two days ago when anti-Azad elements lambasted the Azad loyalists during a meeting of the Congress party, held in Jammu. So much so, anti-Azad elements, according to insiders, didn't allow the Azad loyalists to even speak in the meeting. Those who indulge in the kind of politics the likes of Azad and Omar indulged during the Rajya Sabha elections have no moral and political right to question the credibility of the Mufti. As far as his charge against the BJP that it is a communal outfit, less said the better. The BJP just cannot be termed as communal because it stands for the state's complete integration into India and the application of the Indian Constitution to the state in full. In fact, it is the Congress that has promoted communal politics in the state and created bitterness between the regions and the communities of the state.
