Early Times Report

GANDERBAL, Feb 12: It is true that people are involved in the encroachments of the water bodies but what could be said when the governments departments get involved in the same unlawful activities. This way the water bodies not only get endangered but at the same time it increases the risk of floods.
In Ganderbal district 60 percent of the population lives on either banks of the river Sindh. During last 25 years people have succeeded in raising the illegal structures on the banks of the river and the process still continues.
"Ever since the Ganderbal got the status of the district, the cases of illegal occupation and raising of illegal structures got momentum. The lifeline of the district is facing the threat of extinction due to these illegal structures," said Javed Ahmad. Javed said that the irony is that even the government departments have violated the norms and have come up with the structures. Floriculture Department and the Forest department have constructed two structures in Fatehpur in violation of the norms.
The Education department is not behind; it has also constructed a school on the bank of the river and in this way has put the lives of the knowledge aspirants of the school in danger. Forest department has also constructed a hut so that it is easy for the people of the department wash the hands in the in the flowing waters of the Sindh. There are clear instructions from the High court that no construction should be carried out within 100 meters from the either banks of the river. But despite the High court ban different structures continue to come up in the form of houses, hotels and shops making mockery of High court orders. "Though there are the departments like the Irrigation and Flood Control and the Fisheries Department to look after the river but the authorities of these departments are in slumber. The silence of these departments may cost dearly to the people in case of another flood and the chances of survival may be minimal then," said Zahoor Ahmad. As per Zahoor, it was all by good luck that the people of the district remained unharmed during the devastating floods of the September 2014. But if ever the river from Ganderbal breaches its banks, which is imminent given the construction of the illegal structures, one can easily imagine that what is going to happen then.
Deputy Commissioner Ganderbal, Sarmad Hafeez said that the law will take its own course and everything will be done to restore the glory of the River Sindh. "The district administration has authorized the Tehsildars to take necessary action to stop the illegal occupation and illegal construction," he said.
