Transporters fleecing passengers, JK Transport Department silent | | | Asif Iqbal Naik
Jammu, Feb 12 : Even though the rates of Petrol and Diesel fell constantly in last one year in the global oil market and triggered the tenth cut in fuel rates since August, but the transporters in Jammu and Kashmir continue to fleece the passengers including the pilgrims travelling to Jammu and Katra for religious pilgrimage. While talking to Early Times several people complaint that instead of reducing the transportation charges, the transporters are charging more than the rates fixed by the government of Jammu and Kashmir last year, accusing transport department of having hand in glove with the transporter associations."I boarded a minibus bearing registration No. JK02X-8892 from railway station Jammu up to Press club Jammu, he charged me Rs.10, instead of Rs. 5 or Rs. 8 charged couple of months ago on same route" said a passenger demanding action against the erring minibus driver. Another passenger said that a pilgrim who boarded the minibus from Railway Station Jammu bearing Registration No. JK02AE-0142, the minibus conductor charged him Rs. 15 while in actual it must not be more than Rs. 8. Similarly minibus bearing registration No. JK02AK-7877 charged Rs. 10 from a passenger travelling from Press club Jammu to civil secretariat Jammu which was earlier Rs. 5. Most of the complainants were received from the minibuses traveling from Railway Station to various parts of Jammu, who are charging extra fare from the passengers mainly pilgrims. The buses and Tata Sumo's and other commercial vehicles travelling on Jammu-Katra route also charging extra from the passengers. The buses and private vehicle plying on Jammu-Doda-Kishtwar routes also charges from passengers as per their own will. The people said that the buses playing on long routes loaded heavy goods on the roof of the buses threatening the lives the passengers. The people allege that despite repeated request to the concern District level officers to check the overhead loads of the buses playing on long routes, both administration as well as the traffic police and Motor Vehicle Department turned blind eye towards the public concern which clearly shows that they were hand in glove with these transporters who are violating the law with immunity. |
