Clashes leave 15 persons injured in Kupwara district

KUPWARA, Feb 12: Clashes erupted between security forces and protesters today in some pockets of this frontier district in which at least 15 persons including 12 security personnel and officers sustained injuries.
The 'mysterious' death of 'murder accused' Nazir Ahmad Mughal son of Abdul Rehman, an adopted son of Bahadur Khan aged 32 years of Gujjar Pati, Zirhama, Kupwara sparked violent protests in Kupwara town and its adjoining areas. The protesters observed shut down and held demonstrations against the death of a local man allegedly in police custody.
Kupwara town and its adjoining areas observed a complete shut-down today after violent incidents of stone pelting broke out in many areas including Kupwara cement bridge, D.C Office and at Awoora. Four civilians' sustained injuries during clashes in Awoora, while as at Zirhama protesters made an unsuccessful attempt to torch a police post.The protesters ransacked the office of Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) at Bye pass in the district and damaged the property and burnt party flags. A senior police official said that 15 police and CRPF men were injured in stone pelting at some places of the district.
"Miscreants pelted stones on the deployments at some places in the Kupwara town including the Cement Bridge and Trehgam," official said. In the Awoora village the miscreants tried to set a shed used for Kitchen on fire and also damaged an office.
The deployment of security forces exercised maximum restraint while tackling the stone pelters. The miscreants after pelting stones took shelter in private and public establishments, however the situation is completely under control till the last reports came in. Meanwhile, a government official said that Nazir had complained of abdomen pain and was immediately taken to the hospital for treatment, however Nazir fled from the hospital on the excuse of attending the natures call in the hospital, and later he was found dead in the hospital premises on Wednesday.
The accused was treated at the hospital. After some time, he went to the toilet from where he managed to escape, said official. It has been learnt from official sources that, in view of the prevailing situation, restrictions under section 144 would be imposed in Kupwara town on Friday.
