GMC&H Doctors get N95 masks, Paramedics left to inhale H1N1 | Swine Flu in Jammu | | Arun Singh
Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 20: The highhandedness on the part of administration of Government Medical College and Hospital Jammu to handle the H1N1 swine flu can be gauged from the fact that the paramedical staff deployed in the emergency ward have not been provided N95 respirator masks and working at risk to their lives. Sources told Early Times that it has been more than a week now since the cases of swine flu started reporting in the GMCH Jammu and many have tested positive. More cases are likely to be reported in coming days but with the casual approach of hospital administration the paramedical staff which is working in emergency are without proper mask which can protect them from this deadly disease. "We are working under great fear in emergency ward and afraid of getting infected from this deadly disease and working by putting ordinary mask on face which is not effective in this condition as only a special mask N95 respirator masks work but hospital administration has not provided us this special mask till date," they said further adding that all suspected cases are being admitted in emergency ward first and then after examining they are being shifted to isolation ward which has been set in Chopra Nursing Home. It has been leant from the reliable sources that hospital administration has purchased N95 respirator masks but have provided them only to doctors and ignored the paramedical staff deployed in emergency ward which include Pharmacist, Staff nurses, Multipurpose nurses, Lab assistant, x ray assistant, nursing orderly ect. "Even today a suspected case of Swine flu has been reported in hospital in evening. The patient hailing from village Ranpur RS Pura, is still in emergency ward and has not been shifted into isolation ward till late night," they added. They informed that ordinary disposable surgical masks did not protect health care workers from infection with the flu or other viral infections. N95 masks, on the other hand, offered significant protection against flu infection. "N95 respirator masks fit more tightly around the mouth and nose than ordinary surgical masks. When fitted correctly, they filter out 95% of small particles, although this isn't easy to do in the home setting" they added. |
