LC Elections
Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 20: National Conference President Omar Abdullah and the veteran leader considered senior most in the second rung of hierarchy Ali Mohammad Sagar differed on the strategy of contesting the upcoming Legislative elections, though it was the former whose writ eventually prevailed and Sagar submitted to what Omar wanted.
A day before filing of nominations for Legislative Council Elections on February 18 when National Conference took 11 nomination papers from the returning Officer in the Assembly Secretariat, it took everyone by surprise as to on what basis this move was based. Party sources said Omar Abdullah was away in London when the date of LC polls was announced. Party's stalwart Ali Mohammad Sagar as a matter of responsibility took the initiative after discussion with a couple of senior leaders and decided to contest polls on all the 11 seats which is why party got 11 forms on the last day.
Sources said although Sagar was well aware that party could not win more than two seats, yet it was a move to test political waters and mood of electorate. Sources said Sagar tried to convince Omar Abdullah, there was no harm in going ahead with the move as they would have indicated which way the voters would go for all the seats besides the members of their own party. This was in the wake of the fact that decision on final mandate within all the parties has annoyed many aspirants including the incumbent members of Upper House who wanted nomination for second term. Sources said the strategy in Sagar's mind besides determining political waters was also to give some tough moments in terms of feeling uncertainty about the votes required.
However, Omar did not agree to the idea Sagar had mooted before he arrived in the state, sources said, adding that he contended there was no need to make things complicated as NC was content with victory on two seats. Sources also disclosed that though senior leaders had shortlisted leaders other than the two to whom mandate was given finally (Qaiser Lone and Sajjad Kitchloo), Omar put his foot down again on this too saying the weightage would be given to two members from the two regions who had lost Assembly elections by a narrow margin. Sources further said that in Jammu region alone there were more than five senior leaders who were strong aspirants for the LC berth as this seat is comparatively safer in terms of number of votes required for victory. Ajay Sadhotra, SS Slathia, Rashpal Singh and Gani Malik were among strong contenders from Jammu region whose hopes dashed when Omar decided upon the criteria of margin of votes in Assembly polls.
