Early Times Report

Jammu, Mar 16: A minister and three MLAs are stranded on the Jammu- Srinagar and Jammu Kishtwar highway along with hundreds of commuters for the past 48 hours.
As per the details available with "Early Times", Minister of State for Revenue, Roads and Building Sunil Kumar Sharma who was returning from Kishtwar and Doda tour along with MLA Doda Shakti Parihar, MLA Ramban, Neleem Lengah and MLA Bhaderwah Daleep Singh Parihar was trapped at Kud, while at the same time hundreds of people and over 3000 vehicles
are stranded at different places along the highway.
Both the national highways have suffered massive damages at several places, particularly in between Udhampur and Samroli causing lot of inconvenience to the commuters.
While talking to "Early Times" Deputy Inspector General of Traffic Police Ashkoor Ahmed Wani said, "About 1700 vehicles are stranded near Samroli. National highway is blocked at six to seven places. Continuous rainfall and bad weather are hampering the restoration of the highway. Keeping in view of the condition of the road and vulnerability of the spots, both Jammu-Srinagar and Jammu-Kishtwar highways will remain closed for traffic on Tuesday as well."
He said that once the weather would improve, the first priority would be given to the vehicles trapped at Samroli. He said that Minister Sunil Sharma and three legislators are presently camping at Kud and are safe.
Meanwhile at least 15 families living in Mandri village of Kishtwar District were shifted to safer places after land slide threat loomed large over the village. Red Cross Kishtwar along with District administration is on job to adjust the shifted families at safer places.
Due to heavy land slide in Pul Doda area, 132 KV tower at Pul Doda providing electricity to Kishtwar district got damaged as a result of which the Kishtwar district and parts of Doda district plunged into darkness. One such tower was restored by PDD officials only a week ago. The transmission line was handed over to state government by NHPC last year.
As per technical expert, the transmission line is outdated and cannot withstand the load. The need of the hour is to complete PMRP double circuit 132 KV transmission line, the work on which is under suspension since long time due to differences between the contractor and the government.
