"Advocates" of women's rights mum over lady medico's insult by minister
3/16/2015 11:37:01 PM

Early Times Report
JAMMU, Mar 16: These self-proclaimed women's rights activists hardly let go any opportunity to remain in the limelight but after the March 9 alleged incident of health minister Lal Singh disgracing Dr Gurmeet Kour, a registrar at government psychiatrist hospital here, in a hospital function, none of them have come forward to express his views on the incident.
Yudhvir Sethi (BJP leader)
He would rush to the ever-busy Kachi Chawni chowk in the old city here along with a handful of party activists to burn the state government effigy over trivial political matters and sometimes over the important issues of women's rights. He was also active during the Delhi gangrape and had held several protests, condemning the incident and demanding safety of women in Jammu. He has now surprised all by maintaining complete silence even as a man of the stature of a minister is involved in the alleged incident of dishonouring a lady doctor. The change in his "ideology" may be because of the change of government in the state. After all, his party is now a part of the alliance goverment.
Balvinder Singh (.......)
Till a few years back, he was a backbencher in press briefings by heads of different organisations on variety of local issues and the issues concerning the safety and integrity of women. He now is a frontbencher and speaks very loudly on the rights of women. All his assertions in this regard have, however, turned out to be fake as he, like many other "self-styled" Jammu leaders, has not felt it important to condemn the minister and console the disappointed lady doctor.
Ashwani Chrangoo (Panun Kashmir)
His bark also does not match his bite. He would say big things about the rights of women but, in reality, he too has proved to be ineffective and inactive. He is one among the KP Hindus, who had fled the valley mainly for two reasons - to save their lives and to protect the honour and dignity of womenfolk. He was expected to oppose tooth and nail Lal Singh's "misbehaviour" with Dr Kour but he did not do so for the reasons best known to him. May be he wants to keep himself confined to the rights of KP women only.
Prof Varinder Gupta (Jammu State Morcha)
This man's fight is a bit bigger. He wants to liberate Jammu from the Kashmiri domination but is not ready to liberate women from the male domination. He had developed cold feet while opposing the construction of Karan Market and, now, on the alleged issue of Lal Singh overbearingly speaking to the lady doctor and then insulting her in a hospital function, he has so far maintained complete silence. One fails to understand the reason behind his silence in both the cases. He is in the list of Jammu's noted women's rights activists.
Rashida Begum (NC leader and ex-corporator)
She would easily pick up a quarrel with police over a trivial matter and fight with the officials of Jammu Municipal Corporation for his son who is a contractor. In private discussions and party functions, she would always say that women must be given equal rights and there should be no discrimination with them. In the background of her these statements, how can she remain unconcerned with the issue of minister "disgracing" the lady doctor? Her silence is therefore testimony to the fact that her such assertions are not to be taken seriously because these are not based on fact.
Her popular phrase is: "Meri behno ke liye bhi kush karo (please do something for women also)."

Sheikh Abdul Rehman (Samajwadi Party)
He is a veteran Jammu politician who has changed many parties. A lot was expected from him after the insult of the lady doctor by the health minister who has changed two parties and joined the third (BJP) and now holds the highest "post" in the J&K's Health Department. Rehman has left Jammuites sad and dispirited because of his silence over the issue, which people feel is of immense importance, especially when incidents of crime against women were on the rise. There is anger among the people against all such self-proclaimed women's activists of Jammu.
