Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 16 : In an implicit example of quid-pro-quo, purchased, without creation of Human Genetics department, research equipment worth several crores is lying idle at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU) Katra for years together. Document in the possession of Early Times, reveal that Mass ARRAY SEQUENOM equipment to carry out research work in Human Genetics was purchased on March 30, 2010 w0rth $3,68,389 US dollars, is lying idle in the varsity campus. Interestingly after passage of around five years the department (subject) Human Genetics has not been set up in the University. The documents reveal that Prof RNK Bamezai, the then Vice-Chancellor, SMVDU, Katra made the deal possible bypassing the procedure, for procurement for, costlier equipments. "Prof Bamezai, before being given the plum positing of VC, SMVDU, Katra was working as Professor Life Sciences at Jawahar Lal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi with specialisation in human genetics. He purchased equipment known as Mass ARRAY SEQUENOM to carry out research work in genetics in JNU Delhi. His research work at JNU Delhi was being assisted by Rupali Chopra." Since the day he has joined his previous job at JNU, the equipment is gathering dust and has become useless in the absence of concerned faculty. Moreover the purchase was made without floating any National/Global tenders, following which the State Vigilance Organisation had also registered a case into the alleged malpractice in the university, being run by donation from Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine. With the exit of Prof Bamezai as VC, SMVDU and a guide therein for imparting the specialized knowledge to the scholars in this particular discipline of specialisation, all scholars also disappeared and now the costly machine is gathering dust at SMVDU. |
