Can't give any more concessions: BJP
'Agenda of Alliance sacred; No discussion would be held at PM's level'

Early Times Report

Srinagar, Feb 3: A day after Peoples Democratic Party President Mehbooba Mufti said that she won't form the government till Centre announces Kashmir specific Confidence Building Measures (CBMs) Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday refused to budge saying no further concessions would be granted but was quick to add that "Agenda of Alliance" between the two parties is a "sacred document" and it would ensure that it's implemented.
A top BJP leader while talking to Early Times said, "I am afraid that Centre would give any more concessions to PDP but we are duty bound to implement the Agenda of Alliance which was framed when late Mufti Sayeed was alive."
Asked then why BJP is not coming forward to end the stalemate in Jammu and Kashmir he said, "All top BJP leaders are busy as Anti-Terrorism Conference is going on at Jaipur and top notch ministers and diplomats from different countries are attending the conference."
The leader said, "As soon as the conference ends BJP top leaders would sit together and would ensure that government is put at place in Jammu and Kashmir."
"BJP is in no mood to make further compromises. PDP is trying to repeat 2002 and 2015. It has developed a habit of throwing a ball into partner's court and then sit in the cozy rooms hoping that other side would a give a positive response," the leader said.
The BJP leader said, "PDP needs to understand that we have got a constituency to address as we won 25 seats in Jammu region. We cannot just keep on endorsing Kashmir specific agenda."
The BJP leader said, "PDP should keep in mind that Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, who was respected across political spectrum, is not around. PDP leaders need to act in a matured way rather than beating round the bush. In 2015 Mufti sahib was around and we respected his seniority and statesmanship. We had no objections in handing over the Chief Minister's chair to PDP for six years as a mark of respect for senior Mufti. Even after his death we have not changed our stand and have asked his daughter Mehbooba Mufti to come forward and take the top post. We are offering the Chief Minister's post to her on a platter."
On being told that people are blaming the BJP for the stalemate over government formation, the leader said, "We want to make it clear that no fresh discussions would be held at the level of Prime Minister. Nor can we give assurances to PDP about our foreign policy. Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended a hand of friendship to Pakistan by visiting Lahore but within a few days Pakistan sponsored militants attacked an Airbase at Pathankot. We can't understand what kind of assurance PDP president wants us to give vis-à-vis Pakistan and our foreign policy."
The BJP leader said, "BJP wants restoration of alliance and revival of the government exactly from where it fell with the death of Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. We have earlier said that 10-months are not enough to judge whether Agenda of Alliance has been implemented or not."
The BJP leader said, "As far as Armed Forces Special Power Act (AFSPA) is concerned it will continue to remain in force till the armed forces want it. Our soldiers have been rendering sacrifices for the past 25-years and it's due to their selfless service that peace has returned to Jammu and Kashmir. We still believe that the prevailing peace is fragile and we cannot take chances."
Meanwhile, PDP leader while talking to reporters here said, "BJP will need to respond to issues raised by the PDP President before any steps could be taken for coalition government formation. She (Mehbooba Ji) has categorically stated that some CBMs need to be taken by the Centre. BJP has sought time. It is they who will have to explain,"
"Both coalition partners have to sit and decide," he said.
On BJP leader Ram Madhav's statement there will be no condition for the formation of the government, he said, "There are no fresh conditions from PDP side. We want the implementation of the 'Agenda of Alliance' formed by both the coalition partners."
With regard to time-line for formation of the government, he said, "Until the CBMs are not initiated (by New Delhi), there can be no government formation."
