Heavily funded with central grants and aids, for years India’s northern most state struggled with growth (or no growth) under the shadow of Punjab –one of country’s economically most robust states –but now there is a newly emerging challenge pushing Jammu and Kashmir to the wall. The neighboring and similarly hilly state of Himachal Pradesh has emerged as number one state of the country in almost all parameters which determine the growth story and quality of life.
While there is no remarkable achievement on any parameter of growth, Jammu and Kashmir appears to have suffered a massive damage to its projected investment friendly environment. Among 20 big states in country Jammu and Kashmir ranks at 16 in attracting investors. What is more worrying is the fact that this ranking has been on a constant decline for last four years.

After along wait of two months, the cutoff merit list for admission to various Post Graduate programmes of the Jammu University were finally declared here today. Earlier the same was to be completed in the month of July.
The Department of Mathematics walked away with the honor of scaling maximum merit whereas chemistry and physics followed the suit, as University of Jammu (JU) declared the first cut off list for admission to various Post Graduate courses here today.

Despite change in alignment on Jammu side of the Udhampur-Katra-Qazigund rail line, the Northern Railway has assured Jammu and Kashmir Governor NN Vohra that the completion of the railway link will not be delayed beyond the stipulated time.
Vohra, who is in New Delhi to attend the Governors’ Conference on Internal Security, today had a meeting with the top officials of Northern Railways to discuss progress on various stretched of rail link. The Governor had recently made in inspection of rail projects at different places on the way.

In sharp contrast to the Centre’s stand, a key Government-appointed panel today felt that existing laws were not enough to deal with terrorism and recommended a comprehensive anti-terrorist legislation.
"A comprehensive and effective legal framework to deal with all aspects of terrorism needs to be enacted," the second Administrative Reforms Commission (ARC) said in its eighth report on ‘Combating Terrorism’.
Releasing the 185-page report at a press conference, Commission’s Chairman M Veerappa Moily felt that present laws were not enough to tackle the menace and said the law should have adequate safeguards to prevent its misuse.

A month after Prof Nagendra Sharma’s end of tenure and his quiet departure, the government has set up a Search Committee to find out suitable candidate for the post of Vice Chancellor of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agriculture Sciences, Jammu.
A five member panel headed by Mangla Rai, Director of Indian council of Agriculture Research (ICAR) has been set by the state Governor to select new vice-chancellor of SKUAST, sources said. The Search Committee has been asked to finalise a panel in next one month.
