| 325 Burmese families illegally living in Jammu: Govt | | | KUNAL SHRIVATSA JAMMU, Mar 14: The menace of 'illegal immigration' by foreign nationals has made its roots in the sensitive border state of Jammu and Kashmir also as several Burmese are residing here by way of adopting illegitimate means. The presence of Burmese in Jammu and Kashmir has been admitted by none other than the State Government in a written reply to a question by MLA Prof Chaman Lal Gupta in the Legislative Assembly here today. The State Government said that as many as 325 Burmese families comprising 1435 souls are residing in Jammu district while one woman Bangladeshi national is putting up in District Srinagar on marriage grounds. "325 Burmese families comprising 1435 people are presently residing in Jammu district. In addition, a female Bangladeshi national is residing in district Srinagar after marriage," the Government said. Surprisingly, the Government reply somewhat contradicts itself as on one hand it says that a large number of Burmese are residing in various parts of Jammu district while on the other it claims that appropriate action under law is initiated on case to case basis against illegal immigrants. "The Burmese nationals ingress into the Indian territory has been reported mainly through the Bangladesh Border after which they disperse in rest of the country including J&K. As and when such reports are received by Police in the State, these are enquired into and appropriate action as warranted under law is initiated on case to case basis," the Government informed. Since the Government reply claims that the State Police or other Government agencies initiate action against illegal immigrants as and when information regarding illegal stay of a foreign national is reported. However, the million dollar question remains to be answered that how it is possible that more than one thousand people having extraterrestrial origin are residing in several parts of Jammu city. Giving the break up, the Government said that 47 Burmese families having 204 souls are living in Narwal Bala while 37 families having 204 people reside in Channi Rama. Similarly, 18 such families having 79 souls live in Bhawani Nagar while 44 families with 191 people are putting up at Bagh-e-Bahu. As many as 6 families having 18 souls are living in Vidhata Nagar while 5 families with 18 persons reside in Hamza Colony Bhatindi. One family with seven members lives in Dogra Hall where as 75 families having 291 souls reside in Kiryani Talab. 22 families having 107 persons live in Kargil Colony while 28 families with 138 souls reside in Maratha Mohalla near Railway Station and 42 families comprising 178 people are putting up at Domana. Government said that an Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) run by Abdul Rashid Nazki alias Sheikhwat is operating three schools in Malik Market and Kiryani Talab areas of Jammu city for providing education to the Burmese children.
