Shopian greets Omar with protests for ignoring demands

SRINAGAR, Aug 21: The people of Shopian and adjoining villages greeted the Chief Minister with protests accusing him of ignoring their long pending demands. Omar was in he town to inaugurate a newly constructed bridge.
Villagers of Imam Sahib, Turkawangam, Nagbal, Barbug and Hermain of Wachi constituency of district Shopian assembled at many places this morning and tried to stop the cavalcade of Chief Minister from moving forward.
According to the official accounts, the Chief Minister's visit was scheduled to address a public meeting at Rebbon Khojpora in Watchi, Assembly constituency of Shopian district and to inaugurate one 190 metres long Turkwangam Bridge constructed at a cost of Rs. 12.63 crore and laying foundation of another 50 metres long bridge wort Rs. 3.5 crore at Rebbon village of the area.
The details received in this regard reveal that villagers assembled this morning at many places in Wachi constituency and decided to stop the Omar Abdullah from approaching towards the said villages as according to the villagers long pending demand of around 80 villages of the constituency to confer Imam sahib village a status of tehsil headquarter is ignored and people are bound to suffer because of administrative negligence in this regard. Villagers said that as the coalition Government lead by Omar Abdullah is about to end, in Wachi constituency where one member of legislative council of National conference also lives is deprived of all kinds of basic facilities of life which include road connectivity of these villages with rest of the world, drinking supply and scheduled electricity supply, besides the unique demand of whole Wachi constituency is ignored because of some unknown reasons. Villagers alleged that N.C regime never paid any heed to their demands which they time to time communicated to them through their local MLC, Showkat Ahamd Ganai of Chitragam village. Talking to early times, people of Imam Sahib and Barbug Villages added that according to a preplanned strategy, the local MLC used coercive measures after deploying huge contingent of police and para military forces before arrival of Chief Minister who allegedly beat people to the pulp, ransacked their shops and vehicles and warned them to not protest in front of Chief Minister or block roads in the area to disrupt the law and order.
"These politicians are working for their own households and I being a staunch follower of N.C and local MLC am ashamed of being the follower of this Government" said Riyaz Ahmad my two drivers were beaten to pulp and vehicles were allegedly ransacked after security forces indiscriminately started beating people of different villages who had assembled here to protest in a peaceful way to put forth their demands before the Chief Minister, said Abdul Rashid Chairman of Sumo stand, Imam sahib. Villagers also alleged that Local MLC does not pay any kind of heed to the problems associated with people of Wachi constituency, besides common people are suffering from all means and nobody is listening to them to fulfill their genuine demands.
