Elaborate arrangements in place for Zubin's concert

Srinagar, Sept 4 : Preparations are on in full swing for the 'Ehsaas-e-Kashmir' (Feel of Kashmir) music concert featuring world renowned music conductor Zubin Mehta on Saturday September 7. Mehta's Bavarian orchestra will conduct a composition of Abhay Rustom Sopori, a santoor player, before he gets on with his orchestra. Sopori's composition would have the theme 'Tribute to Kashmir'.
German Ambassador to India Michael Steiner, who is hosting the concert before a specially-invited audience of 1,500 guests, is camping to oversee the preparations for the event to be held in the famous Shalimar Garden built by Mughal Emperor Jehangir. Steiner visited the venue where he was briefed about the security measures being put in place. Mehta will share dias with several local musicians even as the parallel concert called 'Haqeeqat-e-Kashmir' (Reality of Kashmir) to project the alleged human rights violations in Kashmir will be held not far away from Shalimar Garden. Steiner was shown around the venue and briefed about the access control and other measures. He also inspected the podium where Mehta and his 100-strong Orchestra will perform. Meanwhile a fleet of 50 BMWs has been kept on standby for the 150-strong contingent of musicians and their staff who will land in Srinagar on Thursday in a chartered plane from Munich. "All arrangements for Saturday's concert are proceeding smoothly. The concert, to be held in the Shalimar Gardens in the foothills of the scenic Zabarwan Hills, will be telecast live in 24 European countries" a senior Tourism Department official told Early Times on Wednesday. Meanwhile the organizers today said that Mehta and his orchestra band have waived off their fees for the concert as a goodwill gesture. They will be charging nothing for performing in Srinagar, the organizers said. It merits a mention here that the show is conducted amid stiff opposition by the Kashmiri separatists and some civil society groups.
A civil society group plans a parallel counter-concert Haqeeqat-e-Kashmir (Truth of Kashmir) to highlight the alleged human rights violations in J&K. Meanwhile the state government has made elaborated security arrangements for the smooth conduct of the show.
