Early Times Report

Jammu, Sept 4: An eleventh class student of Delhi Public School, Jammu received serious head injuries inside the school premises after she slipped from the first floor corridor and fell on the ground.
According to eyewitness reports, the student was moving through the corridor on the first floor when she suddenly slipped and fell on the ground at the time of disbursal. The short length of the railing may have resulted in the free fall of the 11 th class student as she could not get the opportunity to hold on to the railing to save herself.
The accident took place in a flash and no one present in the corridor could come to the rescue of the girl as she fell instantly from the first floor. The students standing on the ground floor ran towards her and shifted her to the School Ambulance with the help of other school staff. Bleeding profusely she was immediately rushed to the Government Medical College hospital by the school authorities.
Large number of parents who had assembled near the exit gate of the school were shocked to see the girl, soaked in a pool of blood. The condition of the girl was stated to be stable.
However, the accident inside the school premises has once again exposed the safety of the school children inside the school premises and raised many question marks on the school management.
Six months ago on February 7, 2013 a seventh class student was crushed to death inside the school premises by one of the school bus at the time of closing down of school.
According to some parents, last week also an accident took place inside the school when one of the fans hanging from the class ceiling fell on the floor of the class. Luckily, no one was injured in the mishap. The matter was also hushed up.
On the other hand the DPS school authorities Wednesday came in for sharp criticism from large number of parents as they had organised special assembly on the occasion of Teachers Day in the open.
Despite sultry weather conditions the school authorities had not raised any cover/tents for the children.
According to aggrieved parents the children were made to sit in the open for over two hours on 'durries' without any cover over their head and were exhausted.
Ironically, the school management themselves sat in the shaded area while the teachers and children were made to attend the special assembly in the open.
Parents also alleged that the school authorities disallowed many children who wanted to drink water as they were feeling thirsty in the name of maintaining discipline.
Interestingly, the school authorities do not conduct regular assemblies in the name of heat and sultry weather conditions but when it came to organising special assembly on the occasion of Teachers Day they went ahead without providing cover to the children.
