JAMMU, Sept 4: About 40 students of KC Public School in the age group of 8 to 13 attended a two weeks long theatre workshop conducted by Pratiush Toor of the Children's Theatre Academy, Delhi. Pratiush is one of the most versatile contemporary experts in children's theatre and has the experience of working with teachers and children of some reputed schools in Delhi and most of the States in north India. Recently, his production of 'Gopi Gavaiyya Bajha Bajaiyya' with children of a school in the NCR was selected among the top 5 from hundreds of performances by other competitors. The play was staged at Kamani auditorium in New Delhi under the aegis of Delhi-based Atelier Theatre Group's 'Bachpan' Festival and was later televised by the Doordarshan.
For his workshop at KC Public School, he decided to work on the same play. After two weeks of intensive practice, the play was presented before the parents of the participating children on Sept 3 at 7 PM in the Senior School. The play is based on Satyajit Ray's film Gupi Gayen Bagha Bayen. It is the story of two musicians Gopi and Bagha who are expelled by the kings of their respective kingdoms for bad quality of their music. With a mixture of facts and fancy, they are transformed into gifted musicians through the intervention of Bhoot Raja who grants them three boons of being always fed, being able to travel anywhere and being able to perform well as musicians. They eventually travel to a beautiful country, the inhabitants of which have been turned mute by an evil magician and can be brought back to normal only through a high quality musical performance. Gopi and Bagha being kind-hearted dispel the evil magic through their quality music. 'All is well that ends well' is the underlying motif of the drama. All the children working with perfect coordination in the play raised their performance to almost professional level and earned a standing ovation from the audience. Arti Chowdhary, Director of Junior School, after distributing participation certificates, praised the children for their outstanding performance and assured the parents that theatre workshops would continue to be organized in the school for all the children.
