Kulgam, Sept 4: At least four policemen sustained minor injuries after violent clashes broke out in Chawalgam area of south Kashmir's Kulgam district after administration took swift action against the land encroachers who on the pretext of construction Eid Gah in the area tried to grab the truck terminal for which state government has spent crore of rupees. Eyewitness said when additional deputy commissioner Kulgam along a team of revenue officials and machinery arrived on the spot and started dismantling raised structures over the land of Chawalgam truck terminal, people started clashing with the police party accompanying the administration and resorted to stone pelting. During hour long clashes, few civilians and at least four policemen sustained minor injuries. Police resorted to tear gasshelling and dispersed the mob after which administration succeeded in freeing the encroached land. The locals claimed the Awaqaf Committee has decided to establish an Eid Gah in the area. However, the administration maintains that state government has spent crore of rupees over the truck terminal and hence will not allow any body to grab it. ADC Kulgam said that there is already a Eid Gah in the area. "Few people pretending to be members of Awaqaf Committee were trying to grab the land," he said. Meanwhile, police spokesman confirmed the clashes that took place in the area and said,. "A mob tried to disrupt the administrative action by hurling stones on them and the accompanying police party during which four Jawans sustained injuries," adding law and order was restored soon after police dispersed them peacefully. |
