| NC sends Sagar, Aslam to Kargil for damage control | | Withdraws nomination after Cong HC's intervention | | ET Report
SRINAGAR, Sept 10: Amid rising tensions in the coalition camp on the Kargil Autonomous Hill Development Council controversy, Congress High Command on Tuesday said that it was hopeful of a consensus emerging out of the deliberations between the leaders of both the parties at state level. The High Command is also waiting for AICC President Sonia Gandhi to return from United States in a couple of days.
"We believe a solution to this issue would come through negotiations and I am sure leaders of both the parties at state level will sit together in the coordination committee again to iron out the differences." AICC General Secretary and in charge Kashmir affairs Ambika Soni said.
She said that Congress high command was in constant touch with NC and local Congress leadership. Soni is believed to have met Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also who flew to New Delhi to pacify the situation.
"I don't believe in presuming the things. I am optimistic and hopeful that the issue would be sorted out amicably," Soni said. She added that the letters sent to AICC President Sonia Gandhi by the local Congress leaders seeking an intervention into the matter have been forwarded to her (Sonia) political advisor Ahmad Patel and Vice President Rahul Gandhi also.
Meanwhile, NC on Tuesday initiated damage control by sending senior most leaders Ali Mohammad Sagar and Nasir Aslam Wani to Kargil for the on the spot deliberations with the apparently adamant councilors who are believed to have staked claim thus defying party president Dr. Farooq Abdullah's directives of not doing so.
Political Advisor to Chief Minister and senior party leader from Kargil Qamar Ali Akhoon who along with Finance Minister Ab. Rahim Rather is believed to have engineered the conflict said that the majority of the members would be known to everybody on the floor of house.
"We are sure things will ease up and everything will be alright." Akhoon said. He however evaded a direct reply whether the party has withdrawn the controversial nomination of four members, "everything will be known on the floor of the house." Akhoon said while denying revealing the number of councilors his party has at the moment.
In the meantime sources in the Congress camp said that senior leader and Youth Services and Sports Minister Taj Mohi-ud-Din has been asked to sort out the differences with NC in the coordination committee. If sources are to be believed, Taj has been given go ahead by high command and the State Congress President Prof. Saif-ud-Din Soz. He (Taj) is also believed to have spoken to the Ambika Soni and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in the Tuesday afternoon.
In the meantime Senior NC leader Ali Mohammad Sagar said that all the party councilors have withdrawn their claim and the councilors have been asked to adhere to the party high command's decision.
"We have talked to the Party Councilors and told them that they should adhere to the Dr. Farooq Abdullah's decision after which they have withdrawn the claim." Sagar said adding that Dr. Farooq is arriving at Srinagar on Wednesday to assess the situation." Dust will settle down in few days, " he said. |
