| Azad arriving on Sept 14, to register presence in apolitical functions | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Sept 10: Two weeks after attending party function organized by JKPCC, Union Health Minister and former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Ghulam Nabi Azad is arriving here on September 14 to attend a couple of functions in the winter capital of the state. The visit this time is confined to functions organized by NGOs , essentially non political ones. Azad's visit however assumes importance in view of the coalition partners Congress and National Conference facing fresh political turbulence on account of developments related to constituting Kargil Hill Development Council. Sources said Azad has confirmed his participation in the functions which have scheduled on September 14. Though Azad has been attending such functions and making his presence frequently in the past , this apolitical visit is being seen after a long time. While his loyalists and supporters in the party are upbeat about his forthcoming visit, sources said the Union Minister may not be able to attend any party meeting or any other function organized at the party level. However, an informal meeting to take a peep into what is happening in the state unit of party vis- a vis election preparations is not being ruled out. It is pertinent to mention that Azad maintained distance from state, particularly Jammu region post Kishtwar violence, which is being seen as a deliberate attempt by the seasoned politician not to meddle in the muddled affairs rendered by NC led coalition in handling the situation, even as the matter pertained to a place close to his home town Bhaderwah. He has however been watching all the developments keenly in the state. Sources said his presence in the PCC function on August 31 after a long time gap is indicative of the fact that Ambika Soni Congress incharge for the State and party High Command now wants him to get active in the party matters on routine basis, an exercise similar to Assembly elections in 2002 in close coordination with Soni. Pertinently, Azad came last on the political visit in May to review the relief operation in earthquake hit Chenab valley, especially his home constituency Bhaderwah. He along with National Disaster Management Authority team made an elaborate visit to the affected areas and he made assessment of damage himself after holding discussions with local public and administration. However, he kept distance from Kishtwar communal frenzy, a politically calibrated decision. |
