| Ghulam Hassan Mir takes a right stand | | Controversy over Rs 1.19 crore | | Rustam JAMMU, Sept 26: Agriculture Minister in the controversial Omar Abdullah-led government Ghulam Hassan Mir on Wednesday took a right and bold stand and offered himself for a time-bound probe into the allegation that he accepted bribe to the tune of Rs 1.19 crore from the Army to play the Army games. Mir is known for his anti-National Conference and pro-Army views and that is the reason he has always been criticized by the NC leaders, particularly Mustafa Kamaal who has been assigned the task of abusing the Congress and Kashmiri leaders like Ghulam Hassan Mir. Omar Abdullah would have thrown Ghulam Hassan Mir out of his government the day he ridiculed Sheikh Abdullah and accused the NC of indulging in rabble-rousing and in a campaign to hoodwink and mislead the Kashmiri people in general and Kashmiri youth in particular, but he couldn't because Mir was, and is, there in the government out of the Congress quota. As said, Mir has taken a right and bold stand and offered himself for a probe by any agency so that he comes out clean of the motivated controversy created by the enemies of former Army chief General V K Singh. Yesterday, he issued a signed statement and cleared his position. His statement, among other things, read like this: "A concerted effort is being made by various corners to make a dent in my political integrity and popularity. The allegations levelled recently are politically motivated and absolutely false. I had been keeping quiet over the controversies raked up in the past few days, but now I am constrained to speak out as these controversies have not only sought to besmirch my personal reputation, but also humiliated the people with whose support I am where I am. I have been elected and have been a minister three times since 1984. No institution or agency can create popularity. I am neither a man of agencies nor that of any institution. Let me assert with all the force at my command that I have always stood for democracy and strengthening of democratic institutions. I do not need any certificate about my credentials. My people are the best judge of my character and performance. He cannot be cowed down by any 'falsehood being spread' about him. If a fair probe is held, the truth will come out and I will stand vindicated. Therefore, I offer myself to an open and time-bound probe to look into these allegations". The contents of the statement/letter are self-revealing. Let the government hold a probe to find the truth. One thing is very clear: The probe results will prove disastrous for the entire political class and the gang of separatists comprising Mirwaiz Omar Farooq, Yasin Malik, Shabir Shah and many others like them. Let everything come in the public domain so that people know who is who? Mir, it can be said, is unlike other Kashmiri leaders. He has on the floor of the assembly commended the role of the Army and tore into its critics. It is a different matter that what he said in the assembly some three years ago about the Army went unnoticed. |
