| MLAs may seek extension of session..... govt unlikely to budge! | | Issues galore, adjournment motions piling up | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Sept 26: With issues galore and piling up for the opposition parties, adjournment motions seeking suspension of the normal business are all set to curtail the time during which routine work meant to rake up the matters of public importance. As the disruptions are bound to eat into the main chunk of question hour and zero hour, legislators are apprehensive this session may not serve any purpose in highlighting public issues. The moot question remains will they push for extending the session beyond one week and if so, will government agree to that demand. The answer to both the questions in the backdrop of past experiences witnessed during the autumn session is indeed in negative. The session is set to begin from September 30 and has just 7 days of business as per the calendar . Sources within the PDP said that the party will push at least three adjournment motions on the first day , most crucial and politically significant being the Shopian , besides that on Gool incidents and Kishtwar violence in its kitty . Since all these are important and politically beneficial for ruling NC as well, it would be very difficult to outrightly deny discussions over the issues, though the Speaker may not allow disruptions . The party will press for disruption of the routine business and ask for discussion on the issues and related aspects on which the party leadership sees failure of the NC led coalition, sources said. This strategy is likely to reduce the time for the scheduled business , which is why legislators from all parties may seek extension of the session by few more days. But conceding to this request looks and unlikely and in the first place the legislators may not even ask for it as this has borne no results in the past when under pressing situations the government chose to wind up the session even amidst heated discussions and debates. The opposition is viewing this tendency to rush through the session and get it over at the earliest possible time as strategy to escape the heat of opposition on various issues and failures on all counts. The government opposition puts it unequivocally says , is not prepared to face the questions on burning issues nor has it any answers to justify the failures or lapses. It is well understood that given the nature of the issues and incidents that happened lately, the opposition would seek adjournments but at the same time, it is more than clear for all that government will not allow either of the two , instead rush through whatever agenda it has in the scheduled business. This is a general feeling even among the ruling legislators that it is just a constitutional requirement which government fulfills and had it not been so, the government would have preferred to skip it for the Budget session. |
