| Major success for security forces near Line of Control; 10-12 militants killed in operation | | Attempts on to flush out more militants from Keran sector | | Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, Sept 26: Security forces achieved major success in their fight against the militants when they killed around one dozen militants who were trapped while trying to sneak to this side of Line of Control in the Keran sector of North Kashmir's frontier district of Kupwara. Reports reaching here said that a huge group of militants who tried to infiltrate from across the border got trapped after being challenged by the security forces near the Line of Control. So far 10-12 militants have been killed in the operation which was going when last reports came in from Kupwara. Addressing a press conference here, General Officer Commanding (GOC) 15 Corps, Lt Gen Gurmit Singh said that the operation launched against the infiltrated militants was launched on September 24 following inputs that a large group of militants is desperate to sneak in from across the border. "A massive and desperate infiltration attempt by militants comprising of militant outfits like Jaish-e-Mohammad, Lashkar-e-Toiba, Al Badr and Hizb-ul-Mujahideen was foiled by the alert troops deployed in the Keran sector of the frontier Kupwara Division through intense operations laun-ched since the night of September 24," said Lt Gen Singh. The Corps Commander said that troops deployed in the forward areas that came in contact with the residual militants have reported that dead bodies of 10 to 12 militants have been spotted by them so far. He said the operations are in progress adding these would culminate when all the militants are tracked down by the security forces. "Based on credible and specific intelligence inputs about likely infiltration attempts, the troops were alerted. On the night of September 24, militants attempted infiltration over wide frontage with multiple contacts. These militants were detected by the alert troops, effectively engaged and stalled near the areas close to LoC fencing. Intense fire fight ensued resulting into possible elimination of a number of militants. To ensure that militants are not able to infiltrate into the hinterland, additional reinforcements were rushed to the area of operations and an effective cordon was established," said Lt Gen Singh. The Corps Commander said that intermittent firing by militants suggests that some militants are still alive and present in the area. He said desperation among militant organizations to push in militants to this side of LoC is at its zenith since the winter is approaching. He added that militants and their leaders from across the border want to create disturbance in Kashmir valley by pushing in more and more militants. "There is an urgency to push in as many militants as possible before the winter sets in. The impregnable counter infiltration grid established by the troops deployed along the LoC has foiled the infiltration in the past and same would continue in future as well. The security situation is well under control and army will continue to work towards sustained peace in the valley," said Lt Gen Singh. Giving reference of the successful operations of past, the Corps Commander commended the intelligence agencies for credible intelligence, troops and commanders, who with their commitment to the national security have successfully eliminated infiltration attempts in the past. |
