Jammu, Oct 27: Infantry Day was celebrated in the traditional manner at Nagrota Garrison, today. Lt Gen DS Hooda, the GOC of White Knight Corps, the senior most Infantry Officer of the Corps was the Chief host. On this day, sixty six year ago, in response to the first threat to the sovereignty and territorial of our Nation, the first elements of the Indian Infantry landed in Srinagar and resolutely defended Kashmir from failing into the enemy hands. Baramula was overcome and the enemy was within 30 miles from Srinagar on 26 October 1947. At 5 a.m on 27 October 1947, the Battalion Headquarters and a company of the First Battalion of the Sikh Regiment, hastily mustered from internal security duties in Gurgaon, were flown in to Srinagar. These valiant soldiers fought a gallant action reversing the tide of the battle and saving the state of Jammu & Kashmir. The highlight of the function was inauguration of the War Memorial at Nagrota, aptly named as 'Ashwamedh Shaurya Sthal'. Veterans, serving Officers and men, paid homage to the brave soldiers who have made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty. A solemn ceremony was held at the Palma Garrison to commemorate the 66th Infantry Day. The General Officer Commanding Romeo Force and all troops paid floral tributes to the martyrs and brave soldiers at the Force War Memorial. The GOC Romeo Force conveyed his best wishes on the occasion and exhorted all ranks to rededicate themselves to the service of the Nation. |
