| War of words heating up between Congress, NC | | 2014 Assembly elections | | Rustam
JAMMU, Oct 27: The war of words between the coalition partners in Jammu & Kashmir is becoming shrill with each passing day. Both the NC, which has been (mis)ruling the state in alliance with Congress since January 2009, and the Congress are claiming that they would emerge stronger in the upcoming 2014 assembly elections. The JKPCC chief Saif-ud-Din Soz has repeatedly said that the Congress would emerge as the single largest party in the 2014 election and form the government in the state either on its own or in alliance with other political party (read NC or PDP). He has been claiming that the Congress has worked for the well-being and happiness of the people across the state and, hence, the people will give their mandate to the Congress. The NC leaders have also been claiming a grand success in the upcoming election, saying the NC-led government has performed exceedingly well and delivered on all fronts. Out-on-the-limb and rabidly anti-Congress and anti-India NC additional general secretary Mustafa Kamaal has on several occasions ridiculed the JKPCC chief and his claim and asserted that the NC will sweep the polls as and when held. On Saturday, senior NC leader and minister in the Omar Abdullah government Ali Mohammad Sagar made a similar claim and, among other things, said: "The NC will be number 1st and we have worked hard during the past years to make our party the strongest one in the state…The cadre of the NC is strong as compared to other parties and that the people of the state have full 'faith' in NC's leadership. People here identity with us; we have been with them since decades". "The people of the state bear witness to the fact that the regime of the NC has benefited the state most and that the people will vote for NC across the state in the next assembly elections…The masses are well informed that the NC has worked for the employment of youth and strengthening of the democratic institutions in the state. We have worked for development of all the three regions of the state and the response that we are getting from the people confirms our triumph in the coming polls," he was also quoted as saying. The NC and the Congress are political parties and they have the right to say what they said about their poll prospects. But the political situation as it prevails today across the state doesn't really suggest that the people are happy either with the NC or with the Congress. As a matter of fact, there is general consensus that both the parties have failed the people by not doing anything whatever for their well-being during all these fie years. Neither the people of Kashmir nor the people of Jammu province and Ladakh region like the present dispensation because it has, instead of focusing its attention on issues of governance and people-centric issues, only focused on non-issues. The people of Jammu province and Ladakh region in particular are extremely angry both with the NC and the Congress and their main grouse is against the Congress which, according to them, "all along played the role of B-team of the NC and committed serious crimes by endorsing the anti-people, anti-democratic and patently pro-Kashmir policies evolved and implemented by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah". The people of these two regions are angry with the Congress all the more because it, according to them, "has all through directly and indirectly supported the anti-national policies of the NC". The truth, in short, is that anti-incumbency wave is sweeping the state. It would be a great achievement if the Congress and the NC repeat their 2008 performance. The NC had won 28 seats and the Congress 17. |
