| Stake holders demand Accession Day as gazetted holiday | | Omar in trouble for challenging merger | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Oct 27: Inviting trouble for himself and his Party by challenging the merger of J&K with Indian Union recently, Chief Minister and NC working president, Omar Abdullah and his Party has been cornered from all sides for his outbursts and accused of speaking the unlawful language. The BJP which is the main opposition Party of the country has not only challenged Abdullah and his grandfather and former Chief Minister of the State for creating doubts among the people of the Valley about the accession and merger for political upmanship in the State has said it was the first party and Sheikh Abdullah was the first leader which endorsed the accession after the Maharaja Hari Singh signed it on October 26 in 1947. These views were expressed by BJP National Executive Member and Party's State chief spokesperson, Dr Jitendra Singh while addressing a function in connection with observance of 66th Accession Day at Anand Nagar. The function was organized by Sanjeevani Sharda Kendra a social organization. Dr M K Teng a veteran scholar and Prof A N Shalla were the other speakers on the occasion. Dr Singh said after the Maharaja signed the instrument of accession with union of India in 1947 it was Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah and his National Conference which endorsed it and later Sheikh Abdullah gave a speech in the Constituent Assembly of the State while defending his decision. Dr Singh said later again after Sheikh was returned to power in 1975 under Parthasarthy-Beigh accord, Sheikh Abdullah told the then Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi that earlier he was holding the post of Prime Minister , she replied that the clock does not move back and Sheikh Abdullah willingly accepted the post of Chief Minister. He said after coming to power in 1975 Sheikh constituted the committees to review all the Central laws which were implemented in the State after 1952. One Committee was led by former Deputy Chief Minister D D Thakur and another by former MP G R Kochak. While DD Thakur Committee submitted that the Central laws implemented in the State after 1952 have benefitted it in various respects and Kochak Committee was for removal of some laws. But Sheikh Abdullah turned down the Kochak Committee report and accepted D D Thakur Committee report. However, the NC which pursued some divisive politics to suit its interests later in 1977 when elections to State Assembly were ordered in the State under Janata rule at Centre, Sheikh Abdullah led NC declared July 13 so called Martyrs Day as a gazette holiday. He said the same policies are being pursued by his son Omar Abdullah who in the race for coming elections in the State has racked up the issue of accession and merger to please his political Constituency in the Valley after realizing that the Party is losing ground under its feet. Dr Singh while terming accession irrevocable and permanent said for those who can't understand the difference between accession and merger should realize that merger was for smaller units like Patiala which merged into Punjab and not for bigger States like, Mysore, Gwaliar, Junagarh and J&K which acceded to India. Marinating that Accession Day is like a national festival for people of J&K, he demanded that October 26 be declared a gazetted holiday and holiday of July 13 be cancelled. Earlier, it was BJP national spokesperson Meenakshi Lekhi while addressing a seminar here without naming Omar Abdullah demanded action under law against those legislators who challenge accession as they are on oath to defend the national unity and integrity. NPP leader Prof Bhim Singh has also lambasted those who challenge the accession saying it was full and final while giving its historical background. VHP State president Dr Rama Kant Dubey while making a dig at those forces challenging accession said it was full, irrevocable and irreversible accused the personnel friendship of former Prime Minister Pt. Jawaharlal Lal Nehru and Sheikh Abdullah for present mess in the State. |
