Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 27: The latest research that has proved benefits of walking in cancer cure, Dr. Shabab Angurana, Consultant Oncologist, Government Medical College and Hospital Jammu, said that without any other recreational activity, just walking one hour a day could lower risk of breast cancer among women. Dr. Shabab informed that the research has added further evidence that our lifestyle choices could play a part in influencing the risk of breast cancer and even small changes incorporated into our normal day-to-day activity could make a difference. The latest research has published in Cancer Epidemiology "Walking Cuts Breast Cancer Risk". The research reported that post-menopausal women who would walk for an hour a day could cut their chance of breast cancer significantly. They were asked to complete questionnaires on their health and on how much time they were active and participating in activities such as walking, swimming and aerobics and how much time they spent sitting watching television or reading. Those who walked for at least seven hours per week had a 14% lower risk of breast cancer compared to those who walked three or fewer hours per week. "We knew that the best weapon to overcoming breast cancer was the ability to stop it occurring in the first place. Now the challenge was how we could turn these findings into action and identify sustainable lifestyle changes like obesity, late marriage, delayed first child birth, alcohol, & lack of exercises. These were some of the major modifiable risk factors that would help us prevent breast cancer" said Dr. Shabab. He stressed on regular breast self examination in women aged more than 40 years. The breast self examination could be any new, hard lump or thickening in any part of breast, change in breast size or shape, dimpling or puckering of skin, swelling, redness or warmth that did not go away, pain in one spot that did not vary with your monthly cycle, pulling in of the nipple, nipple discharge that stared suddenly and appeared only in one breast and any itchy, sore or scaling area on one nipple. |
