| Jhelum cleaning drive completes | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Oct 27: The three day long Jhelum cleaning drive, organized by the Srinagar Municipal Corporation in collaboration with the J&K Ski & Mountaineering Association and Adventure Tour Operators Association of Kashmir, was completed on Saturday. Nearly 100 volunteers representing different institutions and organizations took part in this social work. Tones of trash, qurban waste and the dead animals were removed from the running river during the drive. The garbage that had accumulated on the river banks mostly in the dense Shahar-i-khas area was also removed. A public awareness campaign was also launched in the motor boats through loudspeakers. The people living close to the river were advised to desist from throwing garbage into the river. The SMC, ATOAK and JKSMA officials also warned them that the culprits could be penalized in the high court for throwing trash in the river or dumping on the river banks. The drive members reported that it was not possible to clear whole of the garbage that is stuck on the trees and bridges in this short time. The voluntary organizations stressed that such campaigns should continue in future too that will help to restore the pristine glory of the river. The drive was monitored by Rauf Tramboo, president ATOAK, Muhammad Yusuf president JKSMA, Mir Mansoor Ahmad, ward officer Jhelum, and Manzoor Ahmad Joo vice president Kashmir Rafting Operators Association. The drive received high applauds from the conscious citizens and was hailed by every common citizen of the city. Many expressed their thanks to the SMC for launching the maiden on river Jhelum. They stressed that such drives should also be undertaken in other municipalities of the valley to keep the whole river neat and clean. |
