Doda, Nov 12: Most schools in the quake hit Chenab valley which were closed following damages due to tremors, have raised bills against Midday meals admissible to the students under Midday meal scheme. In Gundna zone alone, 70 of the 112 Schools have raised bills against midday meals while the fact is that Most of these schools were closed for nearly three months. Sources in the Chief Education Officer Doda said that fictitious bills have been raised through a nexus between school administration, ZEO office and village committees.
Several social voluntary organizations have now demanded an enquiry into the alleged fraud in the name of centrally sponsored scheme that ensures midday meal to the students in the schools. Besides closure of schools after series of quakes that hit the region, there have been complaints of large scale discrepancies in the implementation of scheme. Farooq Ahmed, a villager from Zone Gundna said "My three children study in the same School in three different classes, and the School cooks food only once in a week." Ghulam Hassan, Sarpanch of Panchayat halqa Dandal said that some teaches had withdrawn payments through fictitious bills as the schools were closed for over two months. Members of the Village Education Committee have also come under scanner for approving the bills knowing fully well that the schools were closed.
