| With Durbar also goes power leaving valley residents shivering with cold | | Both metered, non-metered areas face brunt of erratic power supply | | Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, Nov 12: With Durbar Move shifting to Jammu, winter capital of the State, people of Kashmir valley are up against hard times since the power supply has turned erratic thus giving sleepless nights to the masses. The power situation is grim in both the metered and non-metered areas. The Power Development Department (PDD) has not published any curtailment schedule as has been the practice in the past. This has made the matters worse for the people since they never about the schedule being followed as far as supply or curtailment of power is concerned. "It would have been better for the PDD to publish the curtailment schedule as it would have given a clear picture about the power schedule. As on date it depends upon the wish of the department officials as when to shutdown power supply to a particular area. Confusion reigns supreme with no relief in sight," said Nisar Ahmad, a resident of Nowhatta in downtown Srinagar. Most of the people living in non-metered areas said that PDD resorts to two evening cuts during a week adding still then there are frequent power cuts in the evening on the other days of the week. They said that same is the case with the unofficial curtailment schedule being followed at other time slots in a day during a week. "Accountability is missing in the PDD and it is due to this reason that there is complete mess. Nobody is ready to take responsibility and the bucks stops nowhere. For ages we have been listening that there is gap between demand and supply as far as power is concerned. What have the successive Governments done in the past so that the power crisis is put to an end not only in Kashmir but in entire state," said Muzaffar Ahmad, a resident of Soura. People of the metered areas are also facing the heat on account of irregular power supply. The commoners say that power can go off at any time during the course of a day, evening or night. People say that PDD adopts no hard and fast rule in curtailment thus giving them an option to switch off power supply anytime. "I believe there is no fun of metering at present since we are not entitled to round the clock power supply as promised by the State Government. On one side the power supply is erratic and on the other side there is an ever increasing hike in power tariff. One fails to understand the logic of people at helm who don't stop in claiming that there has been marked improvement in power sector in the state," said Abdul Haq, a resident of Rajbagh. People are also miffed over the statements of Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah and his cabinet colleagues that Jammu and Kashmir charges comparatively less power tariff from its people. These people termed the statements of Omar and his associates are absurd adding that power tariff has gone up many a times over the past five or six years. |
