| Govt fails the destitute, widow pension stagnant for years | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Nov 12: Jammu Kashmir has the distinction of spending lavishly on salaries and perks of legislators and ministers but helping the abandoned aged people and widows is low down on the priority list of the government. More often than not, the Government excuses itself by saying funds are not available for the activity. An RTI response revealed that there has been an increase of Rs 25 in the widow pension for the past 15 years. The government showed this generous s gesture in 2003-04. The other side of the story is equally disturbing. T he monthly salary of the legislators was doubled in 2009. Now they get around Rs 80000 plus perks and freebies. The widows, old aged people get Rs 200 and that too after straining their nerves by visiting the concerned office repeatedly. There are other departments with the government who are shying away from fulfilling this social responsibility and have also failed to bring the much needed solace to the destitute. While these departments as a matter of priority should have been paying attention to the cases of destitute, they are only busy in promoting their self interests in other less important ventures, having no significance or relevance on the social front across the state. |
