| Omar again locks horns with Army; this time over Tosha Maidan | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Nov 12: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has once again locked horns with the Army by constituting a committee to look into the case of Tosha Maidan firing range. The committee under the Chairmanship of the Chief Secretary will look into all the aspects of the matter and suggest various viable options. The committee was constituted when GoC-in-C northern command Lt General Sanjiv Chachra had stated in the conference that firing ranges are required for operational capabilities the Army can look for alternative site also. Army had thus presented its case in a humane but operational and effective manner. People in Budgam district are protesting against the re-notification of 11,200 hectares forestland in Toas Maidan as firing range for 20-years. Though Army would be effectively using only 1,809 hectares and compensatory afforestation would also be made by Army. According to intelligence agencies sources, the protests are being fuelled by separatists to bring people against the Army. In the past also separatists are using such tactics to mislead people against the Army and bringing them in point of conflict and then starting a process of violence. However, Army had till now taken careful measure to avoid any direct confrontation with the locals. It's some thing which is not going to the liking of separatists. Chief Minister being a head of the State and with all intelligence agencies at his disposal should have read into between the lines of protests. Omar should have known by now that there is definite pattern for the protests and mostly are fuelled by Army. However, by going with the committee he had sidestepped the sensitivity of the Army . His announcement comes at a time when differences have not narrowed down between the two. |
