Rajouri, Nov 12: To organize National Education Day, Centre for Biodiversity Studies of Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University, Rajouri organized lecture by an expert from Punjab University. Vice Chancellor Prof Hamal was chief guest on the occasion. It is pertinent to mention here that Government of India had given the theme of "Science & Society" this year to celebrate National Education Day and keeping in view the University organized this lecture and also paid rich tribute to Molana Abul Kalam Azad on his 125th birth anniversary. Paying tribute to Molana, Prof Hamal highlighted the unique and distinguished role Moulana Azad played in the freedom struggle and in establishment of secular character of the country. He said that Moulana laid strong foundations of modern education in the country ranging from primary through secondary to higher and technical education and founded the Indian Institute of Technology and the University Grants Commission. On the occasion, Prof S. P. Khullar, FNASC, FBS, FIFS, Professor of Botany, Punjab University, Chandigarh, Secretary of Indian Fern Society and President of Indian Science Congress delivered a lecture on Diversity of Pteridophytes in the Indian Himalayan Region. He also deliberated up on the conservation efforts to be made both in situ and ex situ to preserve and propagate ferns the most beautiful natural legacy. He also stressed the need for linking the benefits of Biotechnology with traditional science. He also visited the various labs of the School and the Lead Garden and suggested further measures to establish a Fernery in the Garden which the School has already initiated. Director Centre for Biodiversity Studies, Prof. B.A. Wafai, Dean Academic Affairs Prof AK Koul, Special Secretary to Vice Chancellor Suneet Gupa, Associate Dean Dr Asgar Ali, Associate Professor Dr Susheel Verma besides faculty members, staff and students were present on the occasion. |
