| Indecisive high command compounds problems of State Cong | | Alliance blues | | Bashir Assad SRINAGAR, Nov 19: Indecisiveness on part of Congress High Command about the future alliance in Jammu and Kashmir ahead of 2014 elections has resulted in uncertainty and chaos within State Congress. If the sources are to be believed the tall leaders of the Congress party from Jammu and Kashmir including Ghulam Nabi Azad, Professor Saif-ud-Din Soz, Dr. Karan Singh and Makhan Lal Fotedar are actually clueless on the question of alliance with National Conference or People’s Democratic Party in J&K. Sources said though the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh and some senior Congress leaders were favouring a re-look on Congress-NC alliance in the state but no word is coming from the Congress Vice President, Rahul Gandhi who according to sources himself is in a fix. Sources, however, said that Rahul has kept the options open and he is not putting weight behind any of the idea as yet which has made the situation even more chaotic for the State Congress unit. They said that it was expected that Rahul may give his verdict on the future alliance after his recent visit to the state but he is yet indecisive and is likely to consult his mother and AICC president, Sonia Gandhi to arrive at some conclusion. Meanwhile, sources said the people engaged in track-II conversations with the Kashmiri separatists particularly the Mirwaiz led Hurriyat Conference have been advising the Congress leadership to take into account certain factors before arriving at some decision about the future alliance. Firstly, they said, the Track-II people have been suggesting not to ignore the public perception about the non-performance of the Omar Abdullah led Government. Secondly, sources said the track-II people have been advocating for a political space for the moderate separatists to ensure an inclusive democratic process in the state for which several measures are essentially to be taken. However, the delay seems to be increasing the curiosity among the Congress leaders particularly the Ministers who have now confined themselves to their respective constituencies. A senior Congress leader wishing anonymity told Early Times that any announcement from the high command with regard to the future course of action was necessary because the party has to prepare its cadres accordingly. He said the party high command should decide on the pre-poll alliance so that party leaders get a clear picture what to do. "The State Congress leaders including the PCC president and Ghulam Nabi Azad have put the ball in the court of the party high command, and have asked them to make a decision on the pre-poll alliance as it is not allowing them to prepare a plan for the elections," said the leader. Though the National Conference and the Congress are running a coalition Government in Jammu and Kashmir since January 5, 2009, both the parties have not yet decided as to whether or not to go for the 2014 Assembly elections in pre-poll alliance. |
