Foundation stone vanishes from site of 'under construction' bridge at Pattan
Contractor humiliates CM by decamping with foundation stone

SRINAGAR, Nov 19: Despite repeated claims of Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah that coalition Government has embarked on a journey to bring holistic development to the state situation on ground suggests that developmental works are limited to the laying of foundation stone with no fruitful activity being taken up.
In June this year, Omar laid the foundation stone of a bridge at Zari Mohalla in Pattan area of Baramulla district. During his speech Omar promised that bridge would be completed by April 30, 2014. However, as on date no progress has taken place and not a single brick has been moved so as to give an impression that construction work on bridge is on.
The worst thing that followed the foundation laying ceremony aptly proves that no one takes the present State Government serious as far as developmental works are concerned. The contractor entrusted with the responsibility of building the bridge removed the foundation stone and as on date there is no foundation stone.
The bridge would have connected people of Zari Mohalla with Trikolbal and Mandyari thus providing much relief to the common masses. The dream of better connectivity for the people of these three villages along with the Gund-I-Ibrahim village falling in the vicinity may remain a dream forever.
"Non-seriousness of the State Government in taking up the work on bridge can be gauged from the fact that nobody among them visited the site after laying the foundation. Had they done so then they would have come to know that no foundation stone exists. Alas! It has not happened and we continue to suffer," said a group of villagers while sharing their views with Early Times.
The villagers have erected logs of wood across the river that passes through the Zari Mohalla and acts as dividing line between this village and Trikolbal village. As the winter is approaching one cannot rule out accidents thus leading to fatal casualties while people are crossing the temporary bridge on either side.
"Many unfortunate incidents have taken place in the past on this bridge which is made up of logs of wood. Some casualties have already taken place and one cannot rule more such casualties in future. When the river is in spate it becomes very difficult to cross the bridge. Children and women are the worst sufferers and it becomes more difficult for them to cross the bridge," said the villagers. The villagers are not only upset with the State Government but also with Moulvi Iftikhar Hussain Ansari, their elected representative in the Legislative Assembly. They say that the legislator seldom visits them and as such he is not aware about the problems being faced by them on regular basis.
"Our MLA is not aware about the problems that we are facing and we have lost hope in him. We are sandwiched between incompetent Government and care free legislator. Given the present state of affairs it seems that we would have to suffer in the future as well," said the villagers.
