| JK tops unemployment list, 400% increase in last 5 years | | Hundreds turn for viva at Kishtwar | | Asif Iqbal Naik KISHTWAR, Nov 19: Unemployment in Jammu and Kashmir is no longer a problem-now it has assumed alarming proportions. With 400% increase in the number of unemployed youth during the past five years, it has turned into a catastrophe. As per the details available with Early Times, the state tops on the list in the country. Curiously 6.11 lac registered unemployed youths in the state constitutes 5.30 % of total population of Jammu Kashmir, a ratio which is highest in any state of India. The National average percentage of unemployed youths in India is 2.60%. In 2007 Jammu and Kashmir have 1.10 lac unemployed youths and in the year 2011 and 2012, the total strength of unemployed youths in Jammu and Kashmir touches 6.11 lac, which is over 400% increase in last 5 years. With no jobs available in the private sector, the majority of the unemployed youths mostly depend on Government jobs. The gravity of the problem can be gauged from the number of desperate youth who turned up for a viva test for 55 posts of Forest Guards advertised by the Government in 2011. And, if reports from Doda are to be believed, the viva for a few posts in Fisheries department is likely to evoke massive response as well. "I had a job in Tata Photon but with the close of the Tata services in J K; I become jobless," said father of two children Yaseer Syed Shah who was waiting for his turn at Dak Banglow Kishtwar for the viva. He said that JK Government fails to lure the private sector adding instead of giving boost to private sector, the Government even fails to convince Tata Telecom not to wind up their services. He said that like him, over 40000 people working in Tata Telecom lost their jobs and are seeking employment in Government sector. Another unemployed youth Rajesh Kumar has applied for the post of teacher. According to him, over 3000 unemployed youth including him appeared in physical test for the post of Forest Guard. He said that out of these 3000, only 236 candidates qualified for final viva test and only 55 will be selected. Tahir Kripak expressed concern over the cost of job form. "Earlier, its cost was Rs. 200 and now they are selling it at double the price," he said. Waseem Ahmed urged the Government to come out with a comprehensive employment. The Government, he said must give monthly stipend of Rs 2000 to the unemployed youth. Most of the candidates slammed the new job policy of the Government who makes the selected candidates entitled to only basic pay for first five years of service. |
