| Former chairman'sold' BOPEE 2012 papers: Crime Branch | | Finally ET exclusive proves correct | | ET Report Jammu, Nov 19: When an Early Times scoop revealed in 2012 that the former chairman of BOPEE, Mushtaq Ahmad Peer had selectively sold BOPEE entrance examination papers to candidates against hefty sums of money whom two of Peer's middlemen had been handling, both the State Government authorities and the BOPEE which was that time headed by Peer issued statements swearing by the integrity and fairness of BOPEE 2012 entrance examination. Unrelenting in its pursuit for truth and unbiased journalism, Early Times not only carried follow up stories on the scam, but also published the names of the beneficiaries who had paid for their selections to the prestigious MBBS course. This was again contested by BOPEE through paid advertisements and press statements. After nearly two years, the sleuths of the state Crime Branch that had registered a case in the scandal following the public outcry over the then BOPEE chairman's integrity and honesty, has raided the residences of Mushtaq Ahmad Peer in Jammu and Srinagar simultaneously. The Crime Branch has finally established that a select number of candidates had paid hefty sums of money to Peer through his operatives in 2012 to pass the entrance examination. In what must surprise and shock everybody, the Crime Branch investigation has also established that not only were BOPEE 2012 entrance papers sold to these candidates, but a special centre had also been established for these candidates in a private hotel on the Boulevard Road in Srinagar so that they wrote their tests comfortably and in case they were unable to write the tests even after papers had been leaked to them, obliging staff at the examination centre could help them during the course of the examination. Bank accounts of parents who paid hefty sums of money to Peer and company have also been scrutinized by the crime branch officials besides the records of their immovable properties. Some of the parents had reportedly sold land to pay for the selections of their wards. The State High Court is already hearing a petition on the fairness or otherwise of the BOPEE 2012 entrance examination. The former BOPEE chairman has connections in the high places which was proved when immediately after his tenure ended, he was appointed as consultant to the State Government for conducting various recruitment tests for selections to be made across the State by the Services Selection Board. The unearthing of the multi-million entrance examination scandal has proved that truth does not need supporters. It stands on its own legs. Finally, those who played with the careers of thousands of candidates seeking admissions to various professional colleges in the State in 2012 would be turned over to justice. Justice for the guilty has to be quick and exemplary so that nobody has the guts to repeat what happened during the BOPEE 2012 entrance examinations. |
