| Congress' pressure works as restriction re-imposed on Geelani | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Nov 19: Pressure mounted by Congress party yielded results as State Government was forced to again keep separatist leader Sayeed Ali Shah Geelani under house arrest. Officially Congress leadership had not demanded restriction on Geelani but the party has unofficially conveyed its resentment to the State Government to allow Geelani to spew venom against India during his anti-election campaign. Sources in the Congress said that party leadership had registered its strong protest before the State Government for its failure to check Geelani who had openly favoured gun to solve Kashmir problem. During his anti-election campaign, Geelani had reportedly stated that gun was a also a solution to solve Kashmir problem. Instead of confining his campaign to opposing elections, Geelani was indulged in instigating people to adopt violent means against the State Government. BJP was all out to corner Congress at national level for 'facilitating' Geelani to spit venom against India to party leadership mounted pressure on State Government to take some steps to stop the separatist leader from preaching violence. Earlier, "free hand" given to separatist leader Sayeed Ali Shah Geelani to intensify campaign against elections and endorse violence for solving Kashmir problem has raised many eye brows because State Government seems to be not interested in controlling Geelani. Although opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has not opposed release of Geelani from house arrest, yet it is reality that Geelani's anti-election campaign has badly affected chances of PDP. Worthwhile to mention here that Geelani was released after PDP organised a massive peace rally at Lal Chowk in the heart of the Srinagar city on November 4. Heavy turnout in the peace rally jittered ruling National Conference and that peace rally gave a clear message that PDP has also managed to make strong base in the Srinagar city also. Political pundits believe that Geelani's anti-election campaign would spoil chances of PDP because National Conference will manage to get support of some of the voters. Decision to give free hand to Geelani is aimed at keeping a check on PDP growing popularity. The way Syed Ali Shah Geelani has been targeting PDP has substantiated the allegations that there is politics is releasing separatist leader from the house arrest. During his anti-election campaign, Geelani has been especially targeting PDP and People’s Conference. Important to mention here that in 2008 Assembly elections PDP could not get power due to failure of the party to get even a single seat from Srinagar district. PDP got seats from all districtS but party drew blank in Srinagar. This time PDP has been concentrating on Srinagar district but anti-election campaign launched by the separatist leader spoiling chances of PDP because boycott call only help National Conference. |
