| Lashkar group commander among two militants killed in Vilgam-Handwara encounter | | | Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, Mar 10: Police and security forces achieved a major success by killing two militants including a group commander of militant outfit Lashkar-e-Toiba in an encounter in the Handwara area of frontier district of Kupwara in North Kashmir. While the group commander was identified as Abu Huraira the other killed militant was identified as Abu Talha. Some arms and ammunition were recovered from the possession of the killed militants. Reports reaching here said that last night police and security forces cordoned off the Sheikh Mohalla of Malikpora-Vilgam village of Handwara area in Kupwara district after receiving inputs about the presence of militants there. The joint party of police and security forces came under an attack from the militants hiding thus leading to an encounter. The encounter concluded with the death of the two Lashkar militants. "The two militants were hiding in a house in the locality and as the house was being cordoned off the militants fired upon police and security forces. One of the militants got killed in the initial burst with the second one giving a tough fight to the police and security forces. He was killed later on with the residential house being gutted," said the reports. A police spokesman while giving details about the incident said that on a specific information regarding presence of militants, a cordon and search operation was launched at Malikpora, in the jurisdiction of Police Station Vilgam, Handwara by Police and 6 Rashtriya Rifles. The cordon and search operation turned into an encounter as the joint operation party was fired upon. "In the encounter two militants belonging to LeT got killed. They have been identified as Abu Huraira and Abu Talha. Huraira was group commander of LeT. Both of them had infiltrated last year and were involved in cases of militancy," said the police spokesman. A Defence spokesman said that based on specific intelligence inputs regarding presence of militants in village Malikpora of Handwara, district Kupwara, a joint operation of Army and JKP was launched which resulted in killing of two hardcore militants. "During the early hours of March 10 an intelligence input was received regarding presence of some militants in a house in village Malikpora. Immediately a joint operation comprising of an RR unit and JKP was launched. While the troops closed in heavy volume of fire was brought on the troops by the militants hiding in the house. The troops immediately retaliated by effective fire which resulted in killing of two militants," said the defence spokesman. The Defence spokesman said that both the militants were foreigners and belonged to Lashkar-e-Toiba. They were identified as Abu Huraira and Abu Talha. He said Huraira was the divisional commander and has earlier been involved in many terrorist related activities. The Defence spokesman said that two AK-47 rifles with 25 rounds, three magazines, one mobile phone, two Chinese grenades, one compass, one pouch, two diaries and currency worth Rs 2180 was recovered from the possession of slain militants. He said during the operation one officer sustained minor injuries and was later administered first aid at Military Hospital, Drugmulla. |
