| Women worst sufferers, rulers unable to exploit natural resources; tap tourism potential | | JK tops unemployment list in North India | | Bivek Mathur JAMMU, Mar 10: Notwithstanding the tall claims of Omar led coalition Government of providing better job atmosphere, people of Jammu and Kashmir are highly unemployed according to a survey when it draws a comparison between the northern states of the country and according to the same survey, the fairer sex discrimination is still on peaks in the state. As per National Sample Survey Office (NSSO), Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, Government of India's 68th round, a comparison was drawn between July 2011 to June 2012 based on Usual Principal Status which counts a person among the "unemployed" during a year if he or she has spent more time within the labour force than out of it and more time in seeking or being available for work than in the "working" state, it was found that Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) has the highest unemployment rate of 4.9 percent in comparison to its neighbouring states of Punjab with 2.8 percent unemployment rate, Himachal Pradesh with 2.0 percent, Delhi with 4.7 percent and Haryana with 3.2 percent unemployment rate. Unemployment rate for males in Jammu and Kashmir, according to the statistics was 3.2 percent only whereas the same for the females was 20.2 percent which is far too high when compared to the unemployment of females in neighbouring states of Punjab with 5.6 percent, Haryana with 4.8 percent, Delhi with 4.3 percent and Himachal Pradesh with just 2.2 percent exhibiting greater respect to the fairer sex. The problem of unemployment among females in J&K based on usual Principal Status has revealed as the gap between unemployment rate of females in J&K (20.2%) and that of All India Level (3.7%) is huge. Further, the unemployment is more prevalent in urban population than in rural areas in the state. Unemployment rate in urban area of J&K based on 68th round of NSS stood at 7.8 percent as against 3.9 percent in rural areas. The unemployment in urban males (4.7%) is higher than of rural male (2.7%) respectively. The intellectuals have suggested the rulers of the state to shift the agricultural work force to high value added/high income agriculture/horticulture, setting up world class tourism infrastructure, more efforts should be made to exploit natural resources, creating a vibrant self-employment-professional work force which does not depend on Government jobs, or for off-take of its services by Government alone. |
