Early Times Report JAMMU, May 23: With political permutations becoming more predictable in the state especially after the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections, the role of mass leaders, who are capable of winning election as independent candidates, will be critical in forming new Government. The kind of support People’s Democratic Party (PDP) got across Kashmir valley; it seems that PDP could emerge as single largest party in the Assembly elections. Going by the facts, PDP got lead in 39 Assembly segments of three Parliamentary seats in Kashmir valley and if the trend continues in Assembly elections, PDP may be able to form Government on its own. It is because the PDP has strong base in few pockets of Jammu region, especially in Rajouri and Poonch districts and if the party is able to get few seats from this area, it may form the new Government on its own and will not require support of Congress or any major party. But if PDP falls just short of the majority and requires support of three to four MLAs, the independents could prove the kind makers. At present there are four independent MLAs and two MLAs belonging to small political parties in the state Assembly and if they manage to retain their seats, they could hold the key to form new Government. Buoyed by the support it got during the Lok Sabha elections, the PDP has started its mission 44+ and its rank and file have started working with the objective of getting enough numbers to form next Government on its own. It is interesting to note that in 2002, PDP formed the Government with Congress despite having only 16 MLAs and in 2008, while it had 21 MLAs, it had to sit in the opposition. |
