| NC leaders continue to come up with lame excuses about debacle | | | Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, May 23: After the recent debacle in the Lok Sabha elections some of the National Conference leaders are giving an impression that the drubbing was there due to the fact that National Conference President, Dr. Farooq Abdullah could not devote much attention to the party affairs over the past few years. This contention seems to be absurd since Dr. Abdullah himself lost the elections very convincingly to Tariq Hameed Karra of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) by a handsome margin. The traditional strong holds of the party in the Central Kashmir districts of Srinagar, Budgam and Ganderbal got conquered by PDP. The 2014 Lok Sabha elections sprung up a big surprise as the NC President lost the elections that had happened never in the past. The situation has emanated such that people more so political analysts say that writing is there on the wall as for as NC is concerned vis-a-vis the upcoming Assembly elections. "There is no safe for National Conference in the Kashmir valley and the party leaders are quite upset over it. Given the yearning of the people for a change one cannot rule out the possibility that NC will sit in the opposition in the next Assembly," said political analysts. The political analysts say that it would be good for the National Conference to sit in the opposition as they would come to know about their weaknesses and take the corrective measures thereon. They said that NC leaders should not shy away from such a situation that is likely to come up after the Assembly elections later this year. "As on date there is no Assembly segment where from the party big-wigs can fight the elections. Dr. Farooq Abdullah his son Omar Abdullah and brother, Dr. Sheikh Mustafa Kamaal have to decide where from to fight the elections. This is a precarious situation and quite testing as well," said political analysts. Safe 'havens' like Ganderbal, Kangan and Sonwar have fallen in the lap of PDP and as such the NC big 'shots' would have to find a seat where from they can fight the elections. In addition seats like Charar-I-Sharief and Budgam too have witnessed massive support for the PDP with NC being uprooted. "Winds of change are blowing across the state and PDP has emerged as real threat to NC in the Kashmir valley. If the recent results are taken into account then PDP would win more than 35 seats from the Kashmir valley while causing a serious dent to National Conference," said political analysts. |
