| Locals denied jobs, land ousted await rehab | | Jobs on sale at 850 MW Rattle HEP | | Asif Iqbal Naik JAMMU, May 23: Though the inauguration of 850 MW Rattle Power Project under construction in Kishtwar by former Prime Minister generated huge enthusiasm among the local unemployed youths, the GVK management who won the bid for construction of prestigious project and its sublet company L&T are denying jobs to the local unemployed youths. Many unemployed youths informed the "Early Times" that project management has been accommodating only those with political affiliations. "Whenever unemployed youths approach the management, they demand letter of recommendation from political parties and their local leadership," said Tilak Raj Shan. He said that like him, many unemployed youths are running from pillar to post in search of jobs and the same were being denied to them by the project management. Many unemployed youths said that middleman nexus is flourishing in the project management and alleged that these middlemen are demanding Rs. 50000 to 1 lakh from unemployed youths for securing their jobs in the project. These unemployed youths demanded setting of recruitment board under the chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner Kishtwar with prominent citizens of the District as its other members so that the transparency could be restored into recruitment process. Local Congress leader Shamsher Bhandari expressed concern over failure of the management to honour its commitment with regard to Rehabilitation and Resettlement plan and demanded immediate construction of roads, schools, health institutions, compensation to land owners at par with existing market rates, employment to the local population in the project and implementation of Corporate social responsibility Plan which includes Skill Development Programme for the youth belonging to the 273 project effected families, construction of 100 bedded well equipped Hospital at Drabshalla under SR plan, procurement of two Critical Care Ambulances for the district, construction of Sports Stadium and Airport in Kishtwar, to chalk out a program for Afforestation with the Forest Department and contribute in maintaining environmental balance in the region beside construction of 8 KM for Kountwara village. Local veteran activists Farooq Ahmed Tapal and Mohammad Hussain Shah laid stress for re-assessment of the loss to the immovable property and business establishments of land ousted people at par with existing market rates. They alleged that while making assessments, the department concerned have excluded their business units and residential house from any such acquisitions and put them to unprecedented financial loss and claimed to be victimized by the Revenue as well as PWD (R&B). |
