CAPD Deptt bosses add to miseries of flood affected people | Eat up sanctioned monthly ration quota | | Majid Nabi SRINAGAR, Oct 14: The underhanded approach of Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution (CAPD) department in dispensing free 30 kilogram ration among the flood affected people had set off a sense of displeasure among the masses as only 28 kilograms are being provided to each household on all ration depots here. Contrary to the government's recent directive to provide free 30 kilogram ration to every family in view of recent catastrophe in Srinagar city, the officials of CAPD are dispensing only 28 kilograms of free rice on all ration depots while rest of two kilos per household goes to officials home. A rough survey conducted by Early Times at some ration depots in civil lines and old city areas of the flood hit city where consumers could be seen waiting in queues to get their share, revealed that only 28 kilograms of free rice per ration card is being dispensed, which they claimed is not enough to cater to an average family's needs. If sources are to be believed, it is the Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution (CAPD), department which has strictly directed their officials on ration depots to provide only 28 kilograms of rice to each family. "We are following the directives of our higher-ups who have asked us to dispense only 28 kilograms of rice to each family. We tried to apprise the concerned officials about the issue but no serious action was taken by them; now it is the public who could highlight this issue in a better way," said a CAPD official. "We are nourishing many families under a single roof as their own houses have either collapsed or are partially damaged due to the recent floods, but the way government is dealing with the present situation has disheartened the people as only 28 kilograms of free rice is being given to each household even though the government had announced 30 kilograms for each family with or without a ration card," said Ghulam Rasool Dar of Abi Guzar. People in some of the areas even alleged that they were given just 25 kilograms of ration. "We wonder where the remaining five Kilos are going," said Gulzar Ahmad of Khwaja Bazar in old city. Tabbasum Qadri a government teacher said that the government has miserably failed on all fronts in this catastrophic state of affairs. "People here even did not get ration on Eid, Government had announced to provide 50 kilogram ration to each family but ironically they were provided with mere 25 kilogram. There is complete anarchy in the system and the government is answerable before the people," she said. |
