Home Minister turn's down CM's recommendation to defer polls | Omar's 'Mission New Delhi' a flop show | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Oct 14: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah making last moment attempt to persuade Centre to postpone the forthcoming Assembly elections in flood ravaged Jammu and Kashmir has ostensibly back fired as the Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh has turned down his proposal. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who has been camping in New Delhi for the past 2-days, according to the sources, had made a "strong recommendation" for postponement of elections in the state to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh. The Home Minister is understood to have told Omar that "Let the Election Commission of India take the final call as the commission is an independent body and no Government is empowered to interfere in the decisions and working of the commission." Sources said that during his 2-day stay in New Delhi Omar through his emissaries got it conveyed to the top BJP leadership that forthcoming Assembly polls in JK should be postponed at least till March next year. They said that Omar tried his best to get it conveyed to the people at helm that situation is not conducive for polls and even the security agencies are not in the favour of holding elections in December. "We have not received any adverse input from the security agencies so far and if they have any apprehensions they would convey the same directly to Ministry of Home Affairs," one of the senior Ministers is understood to have got it conveyed to Omar. Apparently upset by the centre's cold response Omar while talking to reporters said, "Situation in the state is not conducive for holding elections due to the recent floods. He warned that there could be "zero percentage turn out" in Srinagar. Pertinently, ruling National Conference has been advocating that forthcoming polls should be postponed in wake of the recent floods while all major political parties last week told the Deputy Election Commissioner (DEC) Vinod Zutshi that elections should be held on time to save the state from imposition of Governor's rule. People in flood hit Kashmir are of the opinion that ruling National Conference wants to get the elections postponed for its own interests as the party leaders know that masses are fed up of their "misrule" and they want a change. "Recent floods have further diminished the chances of the National Conference even fearing well in the areas which were considered to be its bastions in the recent past," said Ghulam Nabi of Karan Nagar. He alleged that NC leaders are not "beating their chests" for the flood hit people but they are doing so to get a breather and a chance to regroup themselves. |
