JAMMU, Oct 14: While the Assembly elections in the state are expected to be conducted in December, the factionalism in 'disciplined' Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) is growing day by day as unruly scenes which marred a BJP workers meet at Kathua on late Monday evening was enough proof to indicate that dissension is on the rise in the saffron party.
Sources informed Early Times that a BJP workers' meeting turned into a virtual battle field as the rivalry between two groups led by State General Secretary Rajiv Jasrotia and BJP's District unit President Advocate Vijay Sharma came out in open as their respective supporters used abusive language to make counter points.
"The BJP programme turned into a free-for-all situation for both the groups since the workers having their loyalties with Rajiv Jasrotia and Vijay Sharma resorted to abusing each other at the fag end of the event which tensed the atmosphere… Noisy scenes erupted as soon as Union Minister of State in Prime Minister's Office Dr Jitendra Singh, who attended the programme, left the venue," said sources.
"Tempers ran high as the workers owing allegiance to Jasrotia and Sharma had heated exchange of words….The supporters of both the leaders used foul language in belittling each other's leader," they added.
Sources said that the main source of confrontation between the two factions was claim on the party ticket from Kathua Assembly Constituency which is why both the groups revealed their deep rooted and long rearing rift against each other.
"The ugly scenes witnessed yesterday were nothing but the fight to reign supreme in Kathua district… Jasrotia and Sharma never lose an opportunity to outdo each other…With Jasrotia getting more active in Kathua from where he is nurturing a dream to contest the Assembly election irked Sharma loyalists which led to a chaos on Monday," said sources.
"Sharma as well as majority of the members in the District Unit do not like Jasrotia's over-activism in Kathua district… They accused Jasrotia of meddling in the affairs of District BJP while on the other hand Jasrotia assert that being General Secretary of State BJP, he has every right to keep a close tab on the functioning of District BJP," sources added.
Sources further informed that Rajiv Jasrotia is almost certain that he would eventually be successful in getting party mandate from Kathua Assembly segment, however, the District Unit is opposing any such move..
"Jasrotia is sure that he will bag the ticket from Kathua for which he is not only seriously acting on improving his PR skills in media circles but also trying to keep the top brass of the party in good humour. However, he is facing stiff resistance from the District unit," sources maintained.
